How to Install .mcworld Files in Minecraft Bedrock on Windows
Have you downloaded a Minecraft Bedrock map and ended up with a file ending in .mcworld? The good news is that you normally do not need to extract it or dig through Minecraft folders.
On Windows, Minecraft Bedrock can import .mcworld files directly. In most cases, opening the file is enough.
Before you start
This guide is for Minecraft Bedrock / Minecraft for Windows, not Minecraft Java Edition.
A .mcworld file is a Bedrock world package. It can contain a survival world, adventure map, city build, minigame, or a world exported by another player. Minecraft normally imports it when the file is opened.
Before downloading anything, use sources you trust. If a site gives you an unexpected .exe, installer, or password-protected archive instead of a normal world file, do not run it.
Method 1: Open the .mcworld file
This is the quickest method and should be the first one you try.
Download the world file. It will usually be in your Downloads folder.
Open File Explorer and find the file ending in
.mcworld.Double-click the file.
Minecraft for Windows should open automatically.
Wait for the import message. Depending on the map, Minecraft may briefly show messages such as Import Started or Level Import Successful.
Press Play and look through your Worlds list for the imported map.
Bedrock normally associates .mcworld files with the game, so double-clicking should launch Minecraft and begin the import.mods4minecraft

Method 2: Use Minecraft’s Import button
If double-clicking does nothing, import the world from inside Minecraft instead.
Open Minecraft for Windows.
Select Play.
In the Worlds tab, choose Import.(highlighted as a Red Square in screenshot) It is near the Create New World option.
Browse to your downloaded
.mcworldfile.Select the file and click Open.
Wait for the world to import, then find it in your list of worlds.
Minecraft Bedrock for Windows includes an Import option in the Worlds screen for selecting a downloaded .mcworld file manually.
If the download is a .zip file
Some map sites give you a .zip file instead of a .mcworld file. Do not assume every ZIP can simply be renamed.
First, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. Open the extracted folder and check whether you can see files such as:
textlevel.dat db world_behavior_packs.json world_resource_packs.json
The important file is usually level.dat. If the folder contains it directly, you have a usable Bedrock world folder.
You have two options:
If the download is clearly a Bedrock world packaged as a ZIP, you can try renaming the file extension from
.zipto.mcworld, then open it with Minecraft. If that does not work, use the manual-folder method below.
Never rename a Java Edition world and expect it to work in Bedrock. Java and Bedrock save worlds differently.
Method 3: Add the world folder manually
Use this only if the normal import methods fail and you have already extracted the download.
Press Windows key + R.
Paste this path:
%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
Press Enter.
Copy the extracted world folder into
minecraftWorlds.Open that copied folder and make sure
level.datis inside it directly.
The folder structure should look roughly like this:
minecraftWorlds └── MyDownloadedWorld ├── level.dat ├── db └── levelname.txt
It should not look like this:
minecraftWorlds └── MyDownloadedWorld └── AnotherFolder ├── level.dat └── db
If level.dat is buried inside an extra folder, move the actual world folder up one level. Bedrock world saves are stored under the games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds location on Windows.minecraft.fandom+1
Now start Minecraft, select Play, and check the Worlds list again.

The world does not appear
If Minecraft says the import worked but you cannot find the map, try these checks:
Close Minecraft completely and open it again.
Scroll through the full Worlds list; imported worlds are not always displayed exactly where you expect.
Check whether the map needs a newer Bedrock version than the one installed on your PC.
Make sure you installed it in Minecraft for Windows, not Minecraft Java Edition.
Check that the extracted folder contains
level.datdirectly, not inside another nested folder.Download the map again in case the first file was incomplete or corrupted.
Check whether the map creator included required behavior packs or resource packs.
“Failed to import” error
A failed import usually means one of these things:
The file is not really a valid
.mcworldfile.The download is incomplete.
The world was made for a newer version of Bedrock.
The download contains an extra folder layer.
The map requires packs that were not included or are incompatible.
Try downloading the map again from the creator’s official page. If the map is provided as a ZIP, extract it and use the manual folder method instead of repeatedly trying to import the same broken file.
Back up your worlds first
If you are replacing or editing an existing world, make a backup first.
In Minecraft, go to Play, select the pencil icon next to the world, scroll down, and use Export World to save a .mcworld backup. Exported Bedrock worlds can later be opened and imported again.
This is especially important before installing worlds with add-ons, experiments, or unusual behavior packs.
Frequently asked questions:
Can I open .mcworld files in Minecraft Java?
No. .mcworld is a Minecraft Bedrock world format. Java Edition uses a different save format, so it cannot directly open a Bedrock .mcworld file.
Do I need WinRAR or 7-Zip?
Not for a normal .mcworld file. Double-click it or use Minecraft’s Import button. You only need an archive tool if the world was delivered as a ZIP, RAR, or other archive.
Where did my imported world go?
Open Minecraft, select Play, then check the Worlds tab. If it does not show up, restart the game and check that the world folder contains level.dat in the correct location.
Is it safe to download Minecraft worlds?
It depends on the source. Download from known creators or established community sites, avoid executable files, and back up your own worlds before testing a download.
Final note: If this guide helped, leave a comment with the Minecraft Bedrock version you are using and whether you imported a .mcworld file or a ZIP download.
